FAQ

Why should I go Solar? +

When you install a solar energy system on your property, you save money on your electricity bills and protect yourself against rising electricity rates in the future. This is how Solar Power Systems Pay for themselves. How much you can save depends on the local municipal rates and solar policies in your area, but going solar is always a great idea even if it’s just to save on your bill. Call us for an evaluation and we will give you actual savings projections.

What are Off-Grid and Grid tied Photovoltaic (PV) Power Systems? +

The Grid is the Electric transmision and distribution network which belongs to both Nampower and your local municipal authority.

An off-grid PV System then, is a Solar System which is completely disconected from the grid typically producing enough power to cater to all your energy needs and storing excess power in bateries for use at night or on cloudy days.

Therefore a Grid-Tied System is one that is connected to the grid also typically producing enough power to cater to all your energy needs but using the grid as storage by feeding excess power to the grid in exchange for credits which can then be used at night or on rainy days.

Is Solar Power a viable option for my building? +

A few aspects determine if Solar power is a viable option for you:

  • The amount of energy you use
  • The space on your roof
  • That there are no shadows on the available space
  • And Ideally In Namibia your roof orientation should be such that the installed panels face north

Please contact us for an evaluation that will determine if Solar is a good option for you.

How does shade affect a solar system’s performance? +

Typically, shade falling on some of your panels will decrease the output of all your system’s panels but design measures can be implemented to prevent or minimize this.

Will I still have to buy Electricity from the Municipality? +

For an off-grid system the answer is an obvious no. A Grid-Tied system will reduce your bill or cut the amount to zero if your system produces the same amount of energy you use.

How long will my Solar Power System last? +

On average 30 years. Parts of the system are designed to last have different lifespans and manufacturers offer various warranty lengths. Solar Panels typically carry an output warranty of 25 years and generally show a small reduction in output power 20 years after installation. While the Electronic components typically carry a 10 year warranty (up to 25 years now) but in practice last far longer.

How reliable are Solar Power Systems? +

At Supreme Engineering we only use components from Proven manufacturers and design to international standards guaranteeing that the system will generate the specified electricity. And since we offer FREE after-sale technical support for the lifetime of each of our systems, You can call us anytime you need assistance.

Will a Grid-Tied System Produce Power during a power outage? +

To Prevent the electricity your system feeds back into the Grid zapping the poor people from Nampower or the municipality who will be working on the line, the Answer is No for a typical Grid-Tied system without batteries, but adding batteries using Special inverters or inverter configurations and using a transfer switch are amongst some of the ways we are able to change that traditional No to a Yes.

What type of warranty is supplied with the system? +
  • Solar Panels typically have a minimum 10 year product warranty and 25 year performance guarantee
  • 5 to 10 years warranty for inverters
  • 10 years warranty for the mounting system
  • 5 years warranty on installers workmanship
Can I upgrade the system? +

Yes. If you have space, panels and batteries can be added, smaller inverters and charger controllers can be replaced with larger ones or alternatively our initial design for you can be an upgradable system.

How Much maintenance is involved? +

A Grid-Tied System requires very little maintenance. If you live in a dusty area the panels and Electronic Components will just need to be cleaned periodically. An off-grid system with batteries however, requires significantly more maintenance and care in order for you to get the best life time out of your batteries.

Will I need a new Switchboard and meter? +
Yes, a new meter capable of measuring the energy you sell to the grid will have to replace your current one.
How long will an installation take? +

We typically spend 40 hours outside and 10 hours inside the house and complete the job within 2-3 days. That said, our installation queue is typically 6-8 weeks out, sometimes longer, so contact us as soon as you’re interested if you have a sense of urgency about your solar project.

What determines how many of each type of component I need? +

Your Energy Requirements do. From the energy usage information you provide, we will be able to custom design a system capable of meeting your needs for the foreseeable future.

What are MICRO-inverters and what makes them better? +

Micro-inverters convert the power generated by a single (or two) panels to AC. They help overcome the effects of shading or panel failure on the overall output of the complete Solar panel Array

What Components make up a solar power system? +

A typical Solar Power system consists of the following components

  • PV Modules or Panels
  • Inverters
  • Charge Controllers
  • Batteries
I would like a Solar Water Heater, what are my options? +

We generaly offer three types of systems:

  • Flat-plate Systems
  • Evacuated Tube Systems
  • and PV Systems

All of them have their merits and After an evaluation we will be able to advice which is the more appropriate system for you

Will My Solar Water Heater require maintenance? +

At Supreme Engineering we recomend that your heating system be serviced annually. This will ensure that you get the best out of your system

Will I get Hot water on a clody day? +
Some types of systems will still heat water because they work even in the minimised light conditions of a cloudy day and our systems have a backup electrical element to provide energy when the sun is unavailable.
How long will my solar water heating system last? +
A properly installed and serviced system should easily last 15-20 years.
What are the environmental benefits of solar energy? +
For Namibia and for the world Solar Power is a great opportunity to prevent or reverse the effects of our industry on the planet. Solar power, like other renewable energy resources, has many environmental and health benefits. Going solar reduces greenhouse gas emissions, which contribute to climate change, and also results in fewer air pollutants like sulfur dioxide and particulate matter, which can cause health problems.
How Much does a Typical Solar Power System Cost? +
It depends on your energy needs and how suitable your site is for solar. Contact us for an evaluation and subsequent quote.
What are the Financing options available for me? +

Provided you have Good Credit, There are a few institution that provide usually subsidized financing for Renewable Energy Systems in namibia

  • First National Bank
  • The Solar Revolving Fund
  • Kongalend
